Latest Insights and Trends in Holistic Health
This month, we've observed an increasing interest in integrating holistic health practices with modern medicine, particularly in stress management and mental well-being of pregnant mothers. The growing evidence supporting holistic approaches for maternal health continues to drive the adoption of integrative health strategies across healthcare systems nationally.
The article's findings resonate with the fact that 40% of patients use complementary or alternative medicine but often do not discuss this with traditional healthcare providers due to a lack of support and integration. The study underscores the need for better education and training for clinicians on CAIM, which could foster more open discussions between patients and providers, thereby integrating CAIM into traditional healthcare practices and improving patient outcomes.
The National Health Law Program's Doula Medicaid Project has been monitoring Medicaid coverage for doula care legislation since 2018, noting a steady increase in related legislative efforts. Currently, 43 states and Washington DC have implemented or are working towards Medicaid coverage for doula care. As of January 2024, twelve states and Washington DC have implemented Medicaid coverage for doula care, with ongoing efforts to expand access and improve reimbursement rates. For example, Minnesota and California recently increased their rates to $2000 and $3100, respectively.
The Spectrum of State Approaches to Medicaid Maternity Care Contracting
Advocating for reimbursement for holistic health services in maternal health is crucial due to the significant impact of care quality and accessibility before, during, and after pregnancy on maternal health outcomes. Medicaid, covering nearly half of all births nationwide and utilizing managed care, plays a vital role in ensuring timely, equitable, and quality care. However, the lack of national maternal health standards complicates setting clear expectations for managed care performance. State Medicaid agencies use diverse approaches to contracting, which can result in fragmented and incomplete care. This study reviewed literature on maternal health best practices, analyzed managed care contracts across 40 states and Washington, DC, and conducted interviews with state Medicaid agencies.
Recent findings indicate that alternative medicine practices like meditation, yoga, and guided imagery/progressive relaxation are primarily motivated by the desire to improve physical, mental health, and overall wellbeing. Healthier, more active individuals with healthy weight are more likely to engage in these practices, suggesting a reciprocal relationship between good health and alternative medicine. Additionally, individuals with moderate or severe psychological distress, or those who have consulted a mental health professional, are more likely to use these practices, highlighting their potential role in mental health management. In 2022, nearly as many American adults practiced meditation as sought mental health professional services, with a significant decline in meditators accessing mental health care, warranting further investigation into this trend.
